Randy Weston @ Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club

written by Ed Dessisso |
For my ears, there is no more introspective
musician than Randy Weston, the venerable piano
voicing whose creations rival the complexity and
shadings of no less than Ellington and Monk. A
chance to hear Weston live is an immersion in
classic jazz of the highest order of magnitude.
To be able to experience Weston live within the
impeccable musical sight lines of Dizzy’s Coca
Cola is an opportunity anyone with ears should
jump at because the room is acoustically superb.
The combination of materials in the room’s
composition is organized into a musical warmth
that is worth the price of the ticket no matter
who you are there to hear. Catching Weston and
his sextet at Jazz at Lincoln Center had the
extra caveat of including Lewis Nash, in
addition to Weston’s regular drummer, Neil
Clarke in the ensemble. It was momentous and
unexpected that a second drummer was being used
at all. Clarke is so thorough a percussionist I
could not imagine how another drum kit could be
fi t into the Weston program. Then to hear what
Nash’s presence brought to the mix, piloted all
of the music into a different quadrant of heaven
altogether. It was the kind of innovation all of
the Weston groupies and all of the ‘old school’
Brooklyn jazz-heads had come to the club
expecting. Everyone left fully satisfied.
